Sounds like... Sound is used on advertisements on radio, television the Internet, movies. Sound can be used to make a scene more real, to create atmosphere, to add impact. Watch/listen to a range of advertisements and consider the impact of the sound, music and sound effects.Discuss questions such as:
What different messages can music convey? How does music make you feel?
Make a matrix grid to show how different soundtracks make you feel.
Impact music has on: Pizza ad Toy ad Shampoo ad The listener The message (in the short term) The message (in the long term) What impact can sound effects/music have
How can silence be used as a 'sound effect'? Silence can be used to create suspense, represent peace. How else could silence be used?
Listen to a range of songs and jingles to identify features of a jingle. Discuss how the music and lyrics are designed to be catchy and memorable. Write and perform jingles. Make a jingle to advertise your class.
How do jingles and slogans influence the consumer? For example, by singing jingles we know, we become advertisers for the product - for example 'We're Happy Little Vegemites', or 'I Love Aeroplane Jelly'.
Watch pre-recorded television advertisements - cover the screen with a towel and ask learners to listen to the advertisement without watching it. What do you think the advertisement is about? Watch some advertisements without the sound. Does the meaning of the advertisement change with the sound added/taken away?
