MILLIGAN — Local businessman Cash Moore has caused a controversy with his latest billboards.
The signs, which were put up on State Road 4 near the intersection of U.S. Highway 90 in Milligan a few days ago, feature a picture of Cash Moore with large red letters next to him that read “Cash’s: Getting America laid and happy since 1965.” On the opposite billboard, Moore’s daughter and her children are seen with the message, “Please shop at Cash’s, we need diaper money.”
The billboards are presumably an advertisement for his strip club, the Red Rose, on Okaloosa Island, as well as his liquor stores.
Moore said he was pleased with the billboards because, like his other controversial signs in the past, they drew a lot of attention.
“We’ve been putting billboards up for over 30 years,” he said. “We’ve got them all over the place. They’re usually what I would consider comical and a little left field.”
However, some people are not pleased with the billboards’ messages. Greg Porch, who lives in Mill Creek Farms, said they are “unsightly” and have the residents “up in arms.”
“It doesn’t, in my opinion, accurately portray the image of Okaloosa County, Destin, Fort Walton Beach or our family values, or the family vacation paradise that we have here,” Porch said. “Highway 4 is a main thoroughfare from Interstate 65 and Alabama, and that’s the first thing people see right there. ... You’ve got families with kids that may not want their children to see that.”
Moore said his advertisement would stay up regardless of criticism.
“I’m sorry they’re offended, but we do live in America,” he said.
Moore says he plans to put the same billboards up in Crestview, Laurel Hill and on Okaloosa Island, as well as on “three or four” of his business’ trucks.
