Layout of advertisements How do advertisers make sure that you glance at their ad?
The ‘Z’ form: If you learned to read from left to right, your eyes will naturally scan over the page from left to right, in a ‘Z’ form.
Discuss the cultural differences of text construction. Who will get
the message of ads constructed in this way? Who wont?
This information is used to place the different elements of
advertisements where they will catch your eye. There will be
something to attract your attention, and the logo or message will
often be in the lower, right hand section of the advertisement.
Discuss / compare:
How are different parts of an advertisement positioned? For example: prices, symbols, slogans, text and pictures.
How do they influence the reader?
What catches your eye first?
What stands out in different advertisements?
What do we mean when we talk about ‘reading the fine print’?
Camera Angles The angle from which a shot is filmed or a photograph is taken can
affect the way we perceive the action or interpret a character.
Eyelevel: suggests the viewer is on the same level.
It could convey this is a normal view of the action.
It can also bring the viewer closer to the action.
High: A high camera angle can be used to get a
wider shot of a scene or to give the impression a
character is weak or powerless.
Low: Can be used to show the point of view of a child, or to make a character look powerful or frightening
