Use a collection of advertisements aimed at children: aimed at girls, at boys… are there patterns relating to the use of colour? Does pink only appeal to girls? Do we see the use of gendered stereotyping in advertisements? Can we find examples that demonstrate the use of stereotypes (eg girls playing with dolls) and advertisements that do not use stereotypes?
Using the class collection of advertisements:
Collect data to determine colours used in advertising. Use a spreadsheet program (for example, Claris Works or Excel) to construct a graph to display and make sense of results.
Use the collated results to discuss:
Which colours are used more frequently? Why do you think that is?
Which colour combinations are used more commonly? Why do you think that is?
Which colour combinations do you think would help make an advertisement powerful?
Which colour combinations are used to make an advertisement that is... Calming? Scary? Strong? Exciting? Aimed at kids? Aimed at girls? Aimed at boys? What colours would you use? Why?
